English Department

  It is the goal of the Mount Carmel English department to give students the skills necessary to live successfully as Christian men of character in a democratic society.  The graduate of the Mount Carmel English program confidently understands himself, his faith, and the world around him.  Through the study of literature, language and communication, the Mount Carmel graduate learns to be an active, expressive member of his family and community.

  • Department objectives: the graduate of the Mount Carmel program in English will:

  • Learn to effectively decode text in its different forms.
  • Thoughtfully interpret all types of communication
  • Critically evaluate discourse especially for purpose, tone, and bias
  • Form and communicate ideas
  • Write creatively
  • Write clearly
  • Understand strategies to effectively reach an audience for a specific purpose
  • Listen effectively
  • Evaluate and uses research sources
  • Communicate about and actively pursue issues in the culture
