Chicago, IL – Steven Filer of Mount Carmel High School has been selected to play in the 2008 U.S. Army All-American Bowl. Filer will join an elite group of student-athletes selected to play in the eighth annual U.S. Army All-American Bowl on Saturday, January 5, 2008 at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. This classic East vs. West match-up will be televised live on NBC at 1:00 PM EST and will feature the nation’s top 84 high school football players.
Filer, a standout linebacker at Mount Carmel High School, was one of 400 players nominated nationally, and then ultimately selected by the U.S. Army All-American Bowl Selection Committee. The Selection Committee consists of Tom Lemming, Scout.com and SportsLink. As a U.S. Army All-American, Filer is eligible for the following honors: U.S. Army Player of the Year Award, Walter Payton Trophy and the Glenn Davis and Doc Blanchard U.S. Army Awards.
“This is a great honor, and I would like to thank my parents, teammates, and coaches. I would like to especially thank my position coach, David Lenti, who has taken me under his wing since I was a sophomore on the varsity team. He has been like a second father to me, and has helped me grow not only as a football player, but also as a person.”
“Steven Filer shows exceptional instincts for the position, has first step quickness, and shows the ability to close on the football like none other,” said Tom Lemming who is one of the nation's leading experts on college football recruiting.
As part of being selected to the U.S. Army All-American Bowl, Head Coach Frank Lenti is invited to travel to San Antonio compliments of the U.S. Army, and attend the U.S. Army Coaches Academy, an elite two-day learning experience featuring NFL and NCAA coaches, and to participate in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl game week activities.
Since its inception, the U.S. Army All-American Bowl has been considered the nation’s premier All-American game by high school football players, coaches, and fans from across the country, as it is the preeminent launching pad for America’s future college and NFL stars. Reggie Bush, Vince Young, Adrian Peterson and Brady Quinn all made their national debuts as U.S. Army All-Americans. Last year the U.S. Army All-American Bowl set its own attendance record, as 35,151 fans attended the game at the Alamodome.
In addition to Filer earning All-American honors, Coach Frank Lenti was honored as the Coach of the Year in the Chicago Catholic League Blue Division, and eight Mount Carmel football players were named to the Chicago Catholic League Blue Division All-Conference football team.
In his twenty-fourth season as the Caravan Head Coach, Frank Lenti was named as the Tony Lawless Award winner as Chicago Catholic League Coach of the Year. This award complements previous Lawless Awards won by coach Lenti.
In addition to Coach Lenti being named as the Lawless Coach of the Year, senior inside linebacker, Steven Filer, was named as the Tony Lawless Award winner for Player of the Year in the Chicago Catholic League. This is the third straight year that a Mount Carmel football player was named the Lawless Award winner (Dominic Sulo, 2005 and Carter Kopach, 2006).
Senior outside linebacker Kyler Kopach and senior Punter/Kicker A.J. Nichols were named to the Chicago Catholic League All-Conference Defensive Team. In addition to being named the Lawless Award winner, Steven Filer joins the All-Conference team also.
On the offensive side of the ball, the entire offensive backfield for the Caravan received honors as senior running back Tim Brown, backfield running partner Edwin Williams, and junior quarterback Jordan Lynch (Chicago – Mount Greenwood) were selected to first team honors. The offensive backfield is joined by senior wide receiver Justin Bracken and offensive tackle Joe Kogut (Chicago – Mount Greenwood).
