Summer Learning Opportunities
The summer, though a holiday from daily classes and activities, is an important time for students to read and to take advantage of other learning experiences. We are fortunate to be in the Chicago area, a rich source of cultural and creative experiences. Taking advantage of some of these opportunities is a great way to make connections between the classroom and the rest of the world and to stimulate lifelong learning.
To these ends, we have outlined a program of summer learning experiences again this summer. Most of these experiences have meaning for more than one subject area, since learning is and should be an integrated activity that relates one reading, activity or experience to another. And though learning should be done for learning’s sake, we are prepared to offer your son some extra credit (“bank points”) in any or all of his classes for the upcoming school year, depending on the number of activities in which he engages and on which he reports. This is our Carmel Cruise program, open to all of our students and a golden opportunity that should not be missed.
In addition, many courses also require summer learning assignments in order for students to "hit the ground running" in the fall. These specific assignments are outlined by course name for easy reference.
Carmel Cruise Program Overview
We think of the summer as a time to travel, maybe to far off places like London. Some of our students have made trips to other parts of the world, seeing the historic sites, visiting cultural institutions. But you don’t have to go to London to participate in a “Carmel Cruise.” The summer is a time to continue learning, to connect in-school experiences with the real world and to pursue some reading, writing, thinking or other activity that you have never done before, or that you wish to do again with a more thoughtful approach. It is your time to take that kind of “learning cruise.”
