An early and brisk Sunday morning at North Avenue Beach in the Lincoln Park neighborhood welcomed hundreds of participants for the annual Polar Plunge. The Plunge is meant to show solidarity and offer support to the Special Olympics Organization.

19th Ward Alderman and Mount Carmel alumnus Matt O’Shea ‘87, who was participating in his 15th Polar Plunge, put in a call to action for student athletes from South Side schools to join the cause, “It’s important to see athletes supporting athletes, and by being a part of the Polar Plunge, students can do that in a meaningful way.”

Participants are asked to fundraise a minimum of $200 for the Special Olympics, and Mount Carmel High School raised almost $6,500 and had over 50 members of the students and staff taking the plunge. This contributes to the over $1.5 million raised by hundreds of other plungers.

For some, the cause is even more personal. Mount Carmel Junior, Hugh Devane (Beverly), took the plunge for his seven year old sister who has down syndrome and is his true inspiration. “Every moment I’m with her, she’s just like a ball of joy,” he says. “ If it weren’t for her, I don’t know if I would have the same drive to do something like this.”
