Department Philosophy

Mount Carmel’s World Languages Department is dedicated to expanding our students’ knowledge of the world through the study of Latin, Spanish or Mandarin. We focus on building language proficiency in the target languages as well as a deeper understanding and appreciation of the culture and history of the Roman Empire, Spain and Latin American, and China.
Research indicates that the study of World Languages develops and increases a student’s cognitive abilities. World Language study also correlates with higher academic achievement, the improvement of reading abilities, increased linguistic awareness, and the transfer of skills from one language to a student’s native language. In addition, there is a correlation between language learning and students’ ability to hypothesize in science and math. Although there are no standardized, college admission exams in World Languages, studies indicate that language study develops a student’s ability to score higher on SAT and ACT tests.

Requirements

Students are required to successfully complete and pass 6 trimesters (2 credits) in one of the languages offered: Spanish, Latin or Mandarin. Honors students are required to complete 4 years of language study.

Department Goals

Students who successfully complete 2 to 4 years of World Language study at Mount Carmel are able to carry on a conversation and read fairly complex texts in the target language. They also understand significant aspects of the culture and history of the civilizations associated with the target language, including topics related to major historical events, daily life, and art and literature.

Students who have taken four years of a language have the opportunity to take the Advanced Placement (AP) Exam. In addition, all students who take Latin have the opportunity to take the National Language Exam[s in their target language] and compete for national recognition.
