Mock Trial

Mock Trial is an Illinois State Bar Association sponsored extra-curricular program where teams compete against each other in a courtroom-like setting. This club is moderated by Dr. Jon Berry.

The ISBA distributes the case in November, and the teams study and work up the case as both Plaintiffs/Prosecution and Defense. The students' roles are Opening Statements, Expert and Fact Witnesses, Direct Examination, Cross Examination and Closing Statements.
COMPETITION
Students have to have a thorough understanding of the rules of evidence, courtroom etiquette, and formalities. Teams then compete against each other in at least two trials each tournament (once on each side). They are granted points for each trial which are added together and the team with the most points wins. The season starts in late January and culminates in the state tournament at the University of Illinois Law School in Champaign-Urbana in March. Each year the Mock Trial team competes against the Introduction to Law Class All-Stars a week before the state tournament.

AWARDS AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Mount Carmel came in second place at the prestigious DuPage Valley Invitational in 2014, and numerous students have won individual state awards over the last several years.
