Shining the Spotlight Far and Wide

The Advancement Team at Mount Carmel is constantly focused on the mission of finding resources to assist families in financing the cost of attending this exceptional institution. We are fortunate to have benefactors who share in the mission to support current, future, and graduating students of Mount Carmel High School and strive to spotlight each of the scholarships they fund on behalf of our students. The following scholarships are awarded to incoming freshmen and are renewable for the duration of the recipient’s time at Mount Carmel:

The James Barda Leadership Award honors Jim Barda who passed away the summer before his anticipated graduation from Mount Carmel. Established by family members and Class of 1963 friends. Barda Leaders are held to high expectations inside and outside of the classroom.

B.P.A.C. Scholarship was established by members of the Class of 1959 who grew up in the South Shore neighborhood. This scholarship is available to graduates of St. Philip Neri School.

The Thomas Grojean '56 Scholarship was established by Tom and Theresa Grojean for the purpose of supporting students who exhibit strong academic potential but lack the necessary financial resources.

The Kevin M. Hansen Memorial Scholarship was established to honor the beloved MC religion teacher who passed away in the spring of 2015.

The John J. Hrisney ’63 Scholarship is an endowed scholarship established by John Hrisney to assist students who fit the profile of a Caravan man and who are committed to bettering themselves and the Mount Carmel community.

The Hynan Family Award supports families who have three or more students enrolled in Catholic grammar and high schools.

The McDonald Family Award is an endowed scholarship awarded on the basis of financial need. Interested students submit essays regarding why they have chosen to attend Mount Carmel and how their work ethic can propel them toward their goals.

The James McHugh Family Scholarship is awarded to one incoming student each year who is a direct descendant of an alum and who presents a strong case for how his heritage has shaped who he is and what is goals are.

MC President’s Scholarship is a full need-based scholarship. Candidates are young men of solid character who possess strong family values. 

The Stella Myers Scholarship is an endowed scholarship awarded to one incoming student each year who has demonstrated strong work ethic outside of the classroom.

The Nicholas A. Iosue Academic Scholarship
Mr. Iosue was an honorary alumnus of Mount Carmel and former math teacher. This award is given to students scoring in the 90th percentile or higher on the entrance exam. Donations received through the Men of Carmel Fund support this award.

The Gilmore Legacy Scholarship
The Gilmore Family legacy spans several generations and important contributions to Mount Carmel. Dues paid to the Alumni Association help support this award.

The Shoulder to Shoulder Scholarship
Shoulder to Shoulder provides assistance to families who have multiple sons enrolled at Mount Carmel. Donations received through the Men of Carmel Fund support this award.

A number of awards are available to currently enrolled students each year through essay competition and committee selection:

The Richard Bertoldi ’54 Memorial Scholarship is awarded to two rising seniors who have demonstrated strong work ethic and will benefit from financial assistance in their senior year.

The Call Your Mother Scholarship
 is awarded to a student who has learned what it means to be a Man of Carmel as raised by a single parent, or with the responsibility of being the first member of his family to attend college.

The Michael McArdle 2005 Memorial Scholarship
 is awarded to one rising senior based on candidates’ essay response to overcoming challenges.

The Promise Scholarship
 recipients are seniors who have been nominated by our principal and president. The recipients of this scholarship are entrusted to carry the values and legacy of Mount Carmel into the future, and to pay forward the generosity of this award through future contributions of time, talent, and treasure.

The Fr. Aloysius Sieracki, O.Carm Scholarship
 honors the legacy of Fr. Al by awarding students who have demonstrated excellence in mathematics.

The Jack Walsh ‘66 Scholarship
 is awarded to one student each year following an essay competition which encourages them to explore the achievements of our alumni.

The Marianne and Frank Marshall Wehle Scholarship
 is awarded to two students each year based on their reflection on how Mount Carmel can help them achieve their goals.

In addition to the awards administered directly at Mount Carmel, several of our benefactors facilitate the scholarship process from start to finish.

In any given year, several Mount Carmel current, incoming, and graduating seniors are the recipients of various business organizations, parishes, church, and school groups in the Chicagoland area. Information about what might be available can be obtained within specific neighborhoods.
The following post-secondary awards come to us through the generosity of our loyal investors:

The Marquette Bank National Scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior who has an outstanding record of community service and has maintained a B average or higher during his career at Mount Carmel.

Honoring the life, memory, and legacy of this member of the Class of 1996, The Kevin Dowling Scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior who has served the community and has the attitude necessary to succeed in the future as a responsible and caring adult.

The Colonel dePyssler Mount Carmel Scholarship Fund will commence in July of 2019 in celebration Col. dePyssler’s 100th birthday. Managed by a foundation in Louisiana, the endowed fund will ensure four or more scholarships of $1,000 each to students following their graduation from Mount Carmel.
