Sobucki finalist for the 2018 ICEF Davidson Teaching Award

Mr. Andy Sobucki, science teacher and STEM moderator at Mount Carmel, was selected as a finalist for the 2018 ICEF Davidson Teaching Award. The Chemical Industry Council of Illinois (CICI), through the Illinois Chemical Education Foundation (ICEF), selects teachers for the Davidson Award that exhibit outstanding high school chemistry teaching. 2018 is the 52nd consecutive year that CICI has presented the Davidson Award to recognize teaching excellence. Candidates are evaluated on the basis of their innovative teaching methods, their ability to relate theory to practical chemistry, their participation in special programs and teaching success with their students.

The finalist selection automatically qualifies Sobucki to be considered for the 2019 Davidson Award. In response to the application for the award, “the committee recognized [Andy Sobucki’s] work ethic - how impressive it is that [he] teaches every period of the school day and also works as a rancher.” Sobucki also finds time to introduce and grow new STEM activities like the Makerspace and the Hydrogen Car Races.

Principal John Haggerty has worked with Sobucki since he started teaching at Mount Carmel 20 years ago and praises his ability to connect with students, “Andy has a capacity to reach a broad range of students, developing relationships that last beyond the students' years at Mount Carmel.”

Sobucki has been in education for 36 years, beginning as a student recruiter at St. Ignatius and then joined Mount Carmel in 1998. He has always focused on the sciences and launched the STEM cohort at Mount Carmel this year. He is a respected teacher at Mount Carmel and this honor is well deserved. Many will agree with Principal Haggerty’s description of Sobucki’s legacy at Mount Carmel, “Andy Sobucki follows in a line of legendary MC teachers like Matt Smith and Curt Ehrenstrom, men who inspired generations by the knowledge and passion for learning. As a colleague, he is the sort of teacher who always says "yes" to any request, and as a result, frequently takes on additional class sections or other responsibilities.  He's the kind of individual you can trust to get the job done in any circumstance.”
