Freshman Corner

Freshman Corner

Your freshman year is full of new and exciting experiences. It is important that you are aware of all that Mount Carmel has to offer, and that you take advantage of these opportunities in order to set yourself on a strong path to success in high school and college!

Your counselor is an advocate for you who will assist you in navigating your transition into high school academically, personally, and socially.  You will meet with your counselor throughout the year to better understand high school opportunities, the grading system, setting goals, and maintaining a high GPA throughout your high school career.

Tips to Having a Successful Freshman Year and Beyond:
  • Be organized
  • Keep up with course material in all classes
  • Get involved in activities whether it be sports or extracurricular
  • Begin to develop goals for your post-high school education and research colleges based on size, location, and what programs the college/university has to offer

Freshman First Program

The Freshmen First Program is designed to ensure academic and social success for all freshmen through various forms of support and assistance.  In addition to communicating with parents and teachers about students' individual needs and addressing those needs, the Freshmen First Program also provides:

  • One-on-One Meetings: Meetings will take place at various points throughout the school year.  At the start of the school year, each freshman will meet with Mr. O'Connor.  Students are informed about how the program can be helpful, can address any questions or concerns they may have, and they are encouraged to join a club or sport.  Freshmen will meet for check-ins at least once during a trimester and on an as-needed basis.
  • Homework Club: In addition to helping students during school hours, we also provide time after school for additional help.  Homework Club is designed to help all students, but freshmen are highly encouraged to attend since the transition into high school may bring on some academic difficulties.

Students and parents may access their class Google Classroom, which has information about college, careers, scholarships, college/career visits, and procedural announcements.  If you have any questions regarding access to the Google Classroom, please contact your counselor.
