(Chicago, IL) – What began as a side interest in computer programming for a few Mount Carmel students turned into two championship trophies for Mount Carmel’s VEX Robotics team, Caravan Robotics.  “In January, we purchased some VEX Robotics equipment for our STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) Lab, and the students decided to form a robotics team,” said Dr. Michael Rodgers, Mount Carmel technology teacher and mentor for the Caravan Robotics team.

2014 graduates Steven Richardson and Christian Searles have both received invites to join NFL Rookie Mini Camps signing undrafted free agent contracts.  Richardson will make his way out to Los Angeles with the Chargers while Searles heads out east with the Washington Redskins.  Read more about the former back-to-back state champion players here at The Beverly Review.

April 15-21 is National Volunteer Recognition Week, and an appropriate time to recognize the many volunteers who support Mount Carmel High School.

In particular, we wish to highlight two men who have contributed hundreds of hours of service to our students and school over the course of many years.

Mount Carmel High School was among many local schools that participated in National Walkout Day on March 14, as thousands of students exited thier schools to protest gun violence.  The day of protest came a month after 17 students and staff were shot and killed at Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, FL.  Read more about how other schools participated in the walkout here at The Beverly Review.

For the second year in a row, 19th Ward Ald. Matt O’Shea has challenged sports teams from several high schools to participate in the 18th annual Chicago Polar Plunge, which will be held on Sunday, March 4, at North Avenue Beach. The Chicago Polar Plunge benefits the 7,500 athletes of the Special Olympics Chicago program.  Read more about the challenge here at The Beverly Review.

LtCol Kenneth B. Petersen, USMC will be recognized on the Smithosian Air and Space Museum Wall of Honor for his tremedous service with our armed forces along with his incredible work with engineering and aviation.  Read more about Petersen here.

Fr. Matthew Gummess was Ordained to the Priesthood on Saturday, January 20th, 2018 in the Parish Church of St. Thomas the Apostle, Chicago, Illinois. On Sunday, he celebrated a Mass of Thanksgiving in his home Parish of St. Patrick in Joliet, Illinois.  Read more about Fr. Gummess' ordination here.

When Mount Carmel senior Eric Correa was growing up, diving wasn't even on his radar.  Correa figured his future was in gymnastics. He trained with the Olympic Development Program and was a star on the trampoline, competing in several junior national championship tournaments.  Read more about Correa's journey here at the Daily Southtown.

This Saturday will be just like any ordinary dive meet for Eric Correa. Former Heisman Trophy finalist and Canadian Football League Grey Cup champion Jordan Lynch was named the new head football coach for Mount Carmel High School today.  A Mount Greenwood native and 2009 graduate of Mount Carmel, Lynch succeeds Frank Lenti, the school’s previous head coach of 34 years and also the winningest coach in Illinois high school football.
