Do you want to build a robot? Do play-by-play reporting for a live telecast of a football game? Play chess competitively? Perform your favorite monologue in front of a packed house? At Mount Carmel, you can participate in a whole range of activities that will enrich your high school experience
 
Students who participate in extra-curricular activities get to experience unique opportunities throughout the year. Here are just a few examples:

Speech Team is an IHSA event that allows students from across the state to compete in events like Oratory, Extemporaneous Speaking, Humorous Interpretation, and Original Comedy. 

La Caravana experiences Spanish culture throughout the year by dining out at a local tapas restaurants. 

The Caravan Broadcast Network broadcasts football games live giving students broadcast and technology experience.  

Student Life Mission

We strongly believe that they key to success as a student is involvement. We encourage every student to invest himself in at least one extracurricular activity, although most choose to take advantage of multiple opportunities.
Whether your interests are athletic, cultural, societal, academic, artistic, or service-oriented, Mount Carmel offers programs that will match your passion.

  • Band

    The MC Band and MC Drumline performs at various athletic events, school musical events, and throughout the City of Chicago.
  • Caravan E-Sports

    Caravan E-Sports plays Rocket League and Overwatch. Matches are played with other schools through the PlayVs organization which hosts both state leagues and regional leagues.
     
  • Caravan Math Team

    The Caravan Math Team is for students who enjoy exploring & having fun with mathematics
  • Caravan Media Group

    Caravan Media Group is Mount Carmel's very own student-run broadcast network. From game day broadcasts to commercials and newscasts, Media Group keeps you up to date on all the latest Caravan news. To subscribe to the Mount Carmel Youtube Channel, please click here.
  • Caravan Newspaper

    For many years, the Mount Carmel Caravan has been produced through the school’s Journalism class, rather than through participation in an extracurricular activity. This allows students to learn the characteristics of journalistic writing in a workshop format in which they immediately apply their learning through writing assignments.   • Caravan Robotics

    Through VEX Robotics Competition, teams of students are tasked with designing and building a robot to compete against other teams in an engineering challenge. STEM concepts are put to the test as students learn lifelong skills in teamwork, leadership, communications, and more.  Tournaments are held year-round at the regional, state, and national levels and culminate at the VEX Robotics World Championship each April.

    The chess team gives Mount Carmel students the opportunity to compete at a high level, learn about chess and teach those who want to learn more.

    Chess team plays 9 matches in the Chicago Chess Conference, including the Prep Bowl and CCC tournaments and compete at State in Peoria.

    Our Choirs perform during Mount Carmel masses, at school musical concerts and admissions events.
  • Classics Club

    The Mount Carmel Classics Club offers students opportunities to appreciate and learn more about the ancient world; the language, culture, history and mythology of ancient Greece and Rome. 

    In addition to viewing content related movies, we also attend the annual state convention for the Illinois Junior Classical League (IJCL) and compete in the Illinois Certamen League, a quiz-bowl type competition in which teams answer questions covering all aspects of the ancient world.


  • Finance Club

    This club is meant to help students think about money, the markets, financial planning, and how micro and macro-economic decisions influence their lives in the short and long term.

    The MC STEM Cohort was formed for students with an emphasis on using and developing collaboration, ingenuity and determination.  Its goal is to provide an opportunity for students to have a chance to thrive in a college setting using the skills developed here at Mount Carmel.  Ths MC STEM Cohort is moderated by Mr. Caribee Collier.

  • Mock Trial

    Mock Trial is an Illinois State Bar Association sponsored extra-curricular program where teams compete against each other in a courtroom-like setting. This club is moderated by Dr. Jon Berry.

    The ISBA distributes the case in November, and the teams study and work up the case as both Plaintiffs/Prosecution and Defense. The students' roles are Opening Statements, Expert and Fact Witnesses, Direct Examination, Cross Examination and Closing Statements.

  • Model UN

    The Model UN club engages in accurate and authentic simulations of the United Nations system. We accomplish this by learning about how the system works, and skills of debate, compromise, conflict resolution, and negotiation. We learn about the workings of world diplomacy through the lens of current events by utilizing the UN system.

    We research various countries' positions on modern topics and participate in various United Nations simulations both on campus, and in conjuncture with other high school and collegiate Model UN programs. In May, Model UN participates in the Chicago Global Classroom Model UN conference.  Mr. Dominic Scheuring is the moderator.
  • National Honor Society

    The National Honor Society (NHS) is the nation's premier organization established to recognize outstanding high school students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service, and character. 

    Students must apply to be accepted into NHS. NHS members tutor students in the library after school, assist with Open House, Shadow Day, and Parent-Teacher Conferences.

  • Roots Multicultural Club

    The Roots Multicultural Club is moderated by Mrs. Jennifer Davis.  The goal of Roots Multicultural Club is to move past tolerance and increase knowledge of cultural differences and similarities in order to promote unity within our school. This unity will lead to a greater understanding of the world we live in.

    Club members seek to incorporate programs and activities that promote appreciation and awareness of multiculturalism by celebrating, educating, and encouraging students to participate in activities that celebrate cultural differences. Club members will recognize heritage months, plan a liturgy, sell international food during lunch, and take cultural field trips.
  • SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions)

    SADD is a peer-to-peer education, prevention, and activism organization dedicated to uniting “Students Against Destructive Decisions.”

  • Scholastic Bowl

    The Scholastic Bowl is an IHSA sanctioned academic question-answer game that measures both team's and individual's knowledge of math, science, literature, art, history, and pop culture. It is very similar in style to the popular game show Jeopardy.  Scholastic Bowl is moderated by Mr. Dan Burke.

    In a match, two teams of five players each compete to answer the most questions quickly and correctly. There are teams at both the varsity & freshman/sophomore levels. The teams compete in various Invitationals throughout the academic year and the Catholic League Championship tournament at the end of the year. The State Competition is in March.
  • Spanish Club (La Caravana)

    La Caravana meets every other Thursday before and after school in room 303. 

    The objective of La Caravana (Spanish Club) is to learn about Hispanic culture through experiences.

    We can learn through language, food, dance, music, film, clothing, people, religion, traditions, etc.  Field trips include Spanish restaurants, Latino-inspired music concerts, trips to the Mexican Fine Arts Museum, and more.  This club is moderated by Ms. Valerie Beavers.
  • Student Government

    The Student Government is able to voice the opinions and ideas of the student body to the administration. Each officer also takes a turn leading the underclassmen meetings.
