November 1, 2016 officially opened the completely renovated third floor, the $3 million first phase of massive renovations of classroom spaces as part of the $15 million Campaign for Mount Carmel. Thanks to many of those in attendance, the group was able to tour the changes that left the floor looking hardly recognizable. Improved lighting in the halls is the first change noticed as soon as you make your way up the stairs from the second floor. Into the hallway, the group was able to fully take in the transformation before them, as they were escorted into room 308, now a double classroom featuring two touch screen televisions, overhead projector, and writeable walls circling the room. Some in the crowd recognized the room as a science lab during their time in school, and were shocked by the modern amenities and flexible learning space.
There, the ribbon was officially cut to open the space for use in a ceremony that featured a prayer from Fr. David Dillon, O.Carm. ’57, comments from President Ned Hughes ’70, campaign co-chair Marty Hughes ’66, and the viewing of a video that chronicled the complete demolition of the space, retooling of mechanicals and electrical throughout, and the renovation that transformed the entire floor. No space was left untouched, and arguably the most impressive change occurred at the end of the hall, where a renovated bathroom now features new tile, improved layout, and yes – doors on the stalls. After sharing a meal together, guests were allowed to explore the floor. It was a great day for the Caravan, as the next chapter in our history begins to be unveiled. The next phase of the renovations will continue in the summer of 2017 as work commences on the second floor to fully renovate all of those classrooms.
