Caravan Newspaper
For many years, the Mount Carmel Caravan has been produced through the school’s Journalism class, rather than through participation in an extracurricular activity. This allows students to learn the characteristics of journalistic writing in a workshop format in which they immediately apply their learning through writing assignments. The Caravan newspaper can be found online at
MCCaravan.org.
In addition to producing news, sports and feature stories, students write editorials on issues of concern to the student body or the broader community and provide photos that accompany their stories. Each student in the class is expected to contribute a minimum of eight published stories per trimester, assuring fresh content on a daily basis.
More advanced students are encouraged to explore the area of broadcast journalism by creating video interviews that relate to their written content, or to link their stories to video content from the Caravan Media Group.
Future plans for the online news site include adding up-to-date scores of all Mount Carmel interscholastic and intramural sports, expanding the use of video content from Media Group, and incorporating the talents of students in Mount Carmel’s Photography class to improve the visual aspects of reporting.
