Now in its 42nd consecutive year, the Illinois High School Theatre Festival (IHSTF) is the largest and oldest non-competitive high school theatre festival in the world. Over 4,500 students, teachers, university representatives, exhibitors, and volunteers came together to put on theatrical workshops and various high school productions. The IHSTF organizes over 150 workshops, whose topics range from acting, musical theatre, auditions, improvisation, technical theatre, directing, stage management, make-up and costumes, lighting and special effects, to name a few. In addition, more than 25 high school productions, both showcases and full-length, from around the state are selected to perform at the IHSTF each year.

“It’s unlike anything I’ve ever done,” Spellman explained. “There are hundreds of kids involved in this production from all over the state and we all have the same goal in mind: to put on an incredible show”.

“We are very proud to have a student from Mount Carmel representing us to be a part of this major theatre event,” commented Mount Carmel President Ned Hughes ‘70. “We want our students to get the best opportunities whether it be on the athletic field, in a scholastic venue, or through the arts.”

“While he is undoubtedly talented, Jack's best qualities are who he is as a person,” said Sheila Sullivan, a volunteer at St. Barnabas' theater program where she met Jack. “Someone with kindness, drive, and leadership. I am enormously proud of Jack.”

The three-day Festival takes place every year in early January and switches locations between the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Illinois State University. The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign hosted the 2017 Festival from Thursday, January 5 to Saturday, January 7.
